Perplexity Computer

Perplexity Computer is the most ambitious multi-model AI agent available today. Rather than relying on a single AI model, it orchestrates 19 different models simultaneously — routing each subtask to whichever model is best suited. Claude Opus handles complex reasoning, Gemini handles deep research with many sources, GPT-5.2 handles long-context work, and specialized models handle image generation, code execution, and data analysis.

Tasks run in isolated Firecracker microVMs (the same technology AWS Lambda uses), providing both security and persistence. Unlike chat-based tools where work ends when you close the tab, Perplexity Computer tasks can run for hours, days, or even months — checking in periodically, making progress, and notifying you when done. It integrates with 400+ apps and services.

Perplexity Computer requires a Perplexity Max subscription ($200/month). It targets enterprise knowledge workers and researchers who need the highest capability for complex, multi-step work.

The multi-model orchestration is Perplexity Computer's key differentiator. In practice, this means it can handle tasks that would overwhelm any single model — like researching a topic across hundreds of sources, synthesizing findings, generating visualizations, writing a report, and iterating based on feedback, all in a single task.

Limitations: the $200/month price point puts it out of reach for casual users. It's cloud-only with no self-hosting option. The multi-model approach means response patterns can vary between runs (different models may be selected). The product is relatively new and the interface is still evolving.
